ANTHONY D. WHITTEMORE, MD

Dr. Anthony D. Whittemore, a native of Boston, received his medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons, and completed his general surgical training in New York City at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1976. Following a Vascular Fellowship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, he served in the US Navy as Chief of Vascular Surgery for the Sixth Fleet at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia. He then returned to Boston in 1979 and joined the faculty at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.

Dr. Whittemore was appointed Director of the Surgical Residency Training Program from 1980 to 1991 and, subsequently, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1990–2003. Dr. Whittemore is Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and has served as Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery. His scientific interests have concentrated on various aspects of the adaptive response of autogenous vein grafts and the application of gene therapy in mitigating smooth muscle proliferation following vascular wall injury. Dr.Whittemore maintains a surgical practice focused on aortic arterial reconstruction.

Having served as Chairman of the Medical Staff Executive and the Quality Assurance/Risk Management Committees, as well as Director of the multidisciplinary BWH Vascular Center, Dr. Whittemore assumed the position of Chief Medical Officer in 1999. This role provided an opportunity to initiate several hospital wide programs including the Office for Patient Safety, introduction of bar code technology for medication administration, implementation of a web-based medical error reporting system, and the creation of the Center for Professionalism and Peer Support, the Center for Bioethics and the BWH Physician Leadership Program in conjunction with Harvard Business School.

Dr. Whittemore’s publications exceed 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and an equal number of textbook chapters and educationally relevant material. He served on the editorial boards of numerous publications including the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Vascular Surgery, and Cardiovascular Surgery. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Vascular Surgery from its inception in 1991 until 2001.

Dr. Whittemore is a member of 20 professional societies including the Society of University Surgeons and the American Surgical Association. He has served as President of the Boston Surgical Society, New England Society for Vascular Surgery, the Society for Vascular Surgery and the American Surgical Association.

Dr. and Mrs. Whittemore have three children, five grandchildren and live just outside of Boston in Sherborn, Massachusetts.
