MITSS Announces Two Graduate Practicum Students Joins MITSS Staff

Chestnut Hill, MA -- MITSS (Medically Induced Trauma Support Services, Inc.) is pleased to announce the addition of two graduate practicum students to its experienced staff.  Since September, Beth Curley and Renee Lajoie have been working with MITSS helping to provide direct support services to patients, families, and clinicians impacted by adverse medical events as well as assisting in community outreach efforts.  Beth and Renee will both be supervised by Susan LaFarge, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist.

Beth Curley is a student at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology pursuing a Masters in Counseling Psychology.  She graduated from Connecticut College in 2003 with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology.  Beth has worked in a variety of clinical settings and has taken advantage of research opportunities within the field.  After graduating college, Beth went on to work as a case manager for Charles River ARC, an association for individuals who have been dually diagnosed with Mental Retardation and various mental illnesses.  From there, Beth worked at an inpatient psychiatric hospital as a mental health counselor.  She worked on both the adult general psychiatric unit as well as the eating disorders unit.  At this point, Beth felt she wanted to gain research experience and took at position at Boston Medical Center/BU Public Health.  Here she took part in a study looking at the effect of pervasive substance abuse on the course of AIDS.  From there, she went to work at McLean Hospital to work on a family study of Borderline Personality Disorder.  Within that job, Beth was able to work with trauma patients, and it fostered her interest in learning more about trauma, specifically medically induced trauma.  Throughout her career, Beth has had the opportunity to work with many different populations, and she looks forward to conducting the clinical groups, providing one-on-one counseling services, as well as advocacy and promoting awareness in the community.

Renee Lajoie is currently working on her Masters in Counseling Psychology at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.  She completed her undergraduate work in 2007, obtaining a B.S. in Psychology with a concentration in health psychology from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY.   Her professional interests include exploring the psychological effects on the families of patients who have a serious or terminal illness.  She has had various experiences in the field of mental health.  Renee has worked with children with developmental delays as well as adolescents with behavioral and psychological problems.  Her work with MITSS will primarily focus on working with family members, clinicians, and patients who have suffered a medical error or adverse event.  Also, Renee will be helping to research other ways of getting the word out about our organization so that MITSS can continue to grow.  "I am looking forward to working with those affected by medically induced trauma.  This is certainly an underserved population whose needs are still going unmet," said Renee.

MITSS is excited about the addition of both Beth and Renee to our growing staff.  We know that the patients, families, and clinicians we strive to serve will greatly benefit by their experience and enthusiasm.

MITSS is a non-profit corporation headquartered in Chestnut Hill, MA, whose mission is “To Support Healing and Restore Hope” to patients, families, and clinicians who have been impacted by adverse medical events.
